Mucha Cross Stitch Vol. 1ReviewsBought this for my mother who is an avid, accomplished cross-stitcher. She loves Alphonse Mucha, so I knew this was the perfect gift for her. She doesn't have a computer so I spent over $40 to have a local print shop transfer all the data from the dvd (instructions, color codes, etc.) to printed form. Spent $13 to send it to her (it ended up being several hundred sheets, yes 100's). She rec'vd it...loved it, then hated it. The patterns were so hard to see w/o a magnifying glass, insidiously detailed, just plain overwhelming. She said there was NO WAY she would even attempt 1 of the patterns, as it would take her years to complete one... so many color changes, etc. This coming from a woman who cross-stitches EVERY day of her life, and has produced numerous projects and masterpieces. Again, the dvd is well worth the price, but unless you want to devote a portion of your life to one of these projects, you better think twice. As it turns out, I spent $80 for naught, and am totally deflated that my "big gift" turned out to be a goose egg. I can't say enough about how exciting it is to be able to reproduce some of my favorite works of art in cross-stitch. I have a close friend who is a major Mucha fan, and she will be overwhelmed by her gift. Average Rating:![]() |

The Complete Book of Crochet Stitch Designs: 500 Classic & Original PatternsReviewsMy husband got this book for me for Christmas and I LOVE it. I have just started crocheting and this book has easy to follow directions. Good book. Get it! This is an amazing book! It gives you both written and graphic directions so you can understand more clearly what you are doing. There are many designs to choose from, and all of them are done in one color so you are not distracted by colors when selecting a pattern for your project. Excellent photography and I really love the table of contents pictorial format... makes it easy to find what you want. The organization of the book is very well thought out, and seems to go from easy to more complicated. This is a very nice addition to my shelf. It came quickly and in good condition at an affordable cost. This book is incredible! I need a resource so that I can change and/or design crocheted wearables. This book provides me with an incredible amount of stitches to choose from. I've been crochetng for many years but certainly don't have even close to this many stitches at my fingertips. The price is the best I've see for this number of stitches. The pictures and instructions are very clear. The organization makes it easy to use. This is a must for anyone who loves to crochet. This is a nice handy, thick-and-chunky book of crochet stitches. The inside jacket says the book was first published twenty years ago, and unfortunately, the photos LOOK that old--they really date the book. I guess I'm comparing the book pictures to the beautiful card deck I just bought (The Harmony Guides: 101 Stitches to Crochet by Interweave Press), and there is no comparison (the card deck is soooooo much better). That said, though, there are 5 times as many stitches in the book as there are in the card deck, and I think the book will still be a wonderful reference. Average Rating:![]() |

Subversive Cross StitchReviewsThe patterns are difficult enough to be challenging, and entertaining enough to not be boring. My sister made the "This Place Sucks" sampler for our first home, and it's prominently displayed in the hallway. Makes a great story. This book is hilariously funny. Although I'm not sure anyone would display half of the patterns, it is comical to be given the opportunity. I love this book. Not only does it have some great patterns, but she provides a host of links and resources in the back. I received this book as a gift. I agree with the review that I could do these myself, without the book. HOWEVER, I never thought of it. This book was a great jumping off point for making my own subversive creations. The alphabet used can sometimes be a pain and getting used to her pattern style took a little time. All in all a great book. Recently I've immersed myself in the domestic arts (knitting and crocheting, mostly) and wanted to try something new. I had bought cross stitch kits in the past, but never got far on them because I didn't know what I was doing. I always thought cross stitch was for Grandma, but I was glad to be proven wrong by "Subversive Cross Stitch". Witty, snarky, smart, and sarcastic, the designs in the book show that cross stitch doesn't have to consist of "bless this mess" and other such cliche motifs; one can even alter the very simple designs in the book to fit a phrase or theme of their liking. It's a great beginner's guide to cross stitch, and a great guide on how to make your projects your very own. I think all of my girlfriends will be getting a customized cross stitch for their homes this Christmas, and I may even make a few of the less daring ones for some family members. Cross-Stitch Pattern a Day: 2010 Day-to-Day CalendarReviewsI love this product and have purchased several past issues but missed 2008, though :(. The designs are simple to stitch and the finished pieces are very effective. The patterns are on small single pages so I don't have to cart around a heavy book or large pattern; easy to tuck my current project into my purse.I have used them for cards, trivets and coasters as well as small framed designs. I plan to order the 2011 calendar this fall so I won't miss out again. I received this calendar as a gift and I'm very happy! I can't say I will stitch all the patterns -- some aren't my taste -- but there are some cute ones in here. The only thing I would change is the charts. I see that some people like that the charts are recapped on the weekends with the colors, etc. I can see why they did it, but I don't find it very convenient. I would prefer the color chart with the pattern. I don't like to "peek ahead" in a calendar, so I have to wait for the weekend to see what threads I need for that day's pattern. I forsee a lot of cutting & taping in my future. :-) I started getting the cross stitch calendars every year starting 3 years ago. Last year, the calendar was a real treat, and Ms. Spurlock follow it up again with another stunning collection. There is a wonderful mix of different designs, with a bit of something for everyone. There are a few country designs, there are all the signs of the zodiac, some great geometric designs, and a wonderful alphabet that runs through the year. I also fell in love with a series of four fairies, one for each season. There are designs for the eco conscious, and even a knight with a dragon that I just might make for my husband this coming Christmas! As always, every week the weekend provides the recap and gives you the numbers of which DMC floss to buy, and the back of every day gives a pattern in symbols. It is a wonderful system, and since most of the designs are between 5"X5" and 7"X7" (and combos thereof) you can accomplish most of these in a weekend or two. They make wonderful presents, and some of the smaller ones even make great Christmas ornaments! I highly recommend this for anyone who loves Cross Stitch or anyone who likes crafts and have been curious about cross stitch. I have been collecting these calenders for several years now; they make great gifts and also have the perfect patterns for every occasion. I'm an avid cross-stitcher and I've already purchased Cross-Stitch Pattern a Day since year 2000. I've already done some of it's patterns but unfortunately, I find some of its patterns very "elementary" or too ordinary. However, there are also patterns which are really pretty and I made some as gifts. I suggest that they should also include quotes or bible-verses in their patterns OR they should have a theme every month like Some Things from the Kitchen for the whole month of December or Flowers of Spring for the whole month of March or April. The price is way much cheaper from [...],too But all in all ... Cross-stitch Pattern a Day is a must have for cross-stitchers like me. Average Rating:![]() |
4 Crochet Tips To Remember
What follows is information that I have pulled together from many different sources. The secrets, tips, and techniques you read here are from my book "Crocheting Made Simple". I hope you find it both interesting and helpful.
It may sound silly, but crochet patterns have been finished for many years. Recently it is becoming a trend again in the fashion world. By learning about it, the individual will be proficient to come up with some grand designs to present to people.
Start With the Basics
In the first place when individuals begin something new, it is best to start with the fundamentals. This happens in nearly all things and crochet patterns is no different.
In addition, if the individual has done cross stitching in the past, it will be simple to comprehend how certain designs are done. If the person did not possess any familiarity in the past, then it is best to enroll in a class then after some interval, can make a move on to crochet patterns.
Crochet and the Fashion World
Most people would agree that the fashion world is an extremely good area to uncover more about crochet patterns. Inasmuch as this is dictated by several of the world's famous brands, wisdom from these professionals will keep the individual up to date on the current trends.
In fact, fashion shows generally feature the upcoming apparel a few months before it is launched. By watching, then studying the fabric once it hits the stores, the individual will be able to construct a comparable design that is also abreast with what is new and hot.
By the way should the individual not be able to see the fashion exhibit, and then the next location to learn of it is in reference materials such as books and videos that can be bought at the nearby specialty store. This should have everything including the materials to be used.
There are also several shows on TV and magazines that can be bought which feature some of the fundamental to the more innovative designs. The person has to merely understand the instructions noted and work on it.
One Color Basic
In the beginning the fundamentals should be done with only using one color. The individual should practice this in making a basic item such as a wash cloth. Should this be successful, then moving on to greater effects can start?
Next, a slipknot is one of the fundamentals in beginning crochet patterns. The individual does not need to use a needle and totally work it with the hands. While one end is in around the fingers, the ball of yarn can be thrown in the air.
Soon after beginning a few loops, this will end with the person forming a knot using both hands.
Switching Colors
One of the numerous challenges in crochet patterns is changing from one color to the next. This can be done by stopping with one color then slowly sliding a different color thread into the needle.
Without a doubt another fundamental method that the individual should learn of is mixing. This is done using 2 needles each with a different color of thread. By making these face one another and letting one of the needles work above the other, the print will become multi-colored.
Furthermore the purl stitch is another method used to construct crochet patterns. This is really comparable to mixing. The yarn is already around one needle. The individual will then use the other to work its way inside until both can be used to work together to produce a pattern.
On the other hand cross stitching is very challenging and will require a lot of effort. After exercising several of the essentials, the individual can advance on to form figures, shapes, lines and others to make it stand out.
4 Things to Remember
1. The individual has to bear in mind that the fashion trade goes by seasons. This means that the sole should work fast so that once it is finished; it can still be used in the suitable period.
2. Beginners should be able to sketch it on paper to analyze how a determined design should be finished. By using this as a guide, the person will be able to monitor the progression of the work.
3. Crochet patterns can be done on nearly anything. By working on various little household items then moving on to clothing, and accessories, the person's crochet pattern skills will be dramatically improved.
4. There are a lot of designs and not everything is in the book. Some of it can be from the person's creativity and after sketching it and action with needles that concept can be brought to existence.
In closing there are numerous ways to find out about the basics of crochet patterns. The person should just apply some time to read about it and observe how this is accomplished.
