Cross Stitcher's Countdown To Christmas Cross Stitcher's Countdown To Christmas

Reviews

Lots of novel motifs and embellishments. Makes me want to pick up my needle and get to work on projects for next Christmas. Designs are contemporary but there are also some pieces that use Red Work, a Mitten garland, and birds that are very pretty. Many, many more are included. What I really enjoy is the size and coloring of the charts.

This book has more projects I actually want to work on than any other I've seen for a while. It uses the newer DMC colors, specialty threads like Kreinik braid and Mill Hill beads. That gives the finished pieces a more modern, polished look than the old 80's country stitching style. Most of the projects are small to medium-sized, and could be completed in a day or two. The color charts are easy to read and use.

Christmas Stockings in Cross-Stitch Christmas Stockings in Cross-Stitch

Reviews

I was very excited to get this book to start on stockings for me, my husband and 2nd daughter. I was disappointed with the limited designs. Half of the designs are only stocking toppers. The full stocking designs are nice but some aren't even related to Christmas. They are flowers or animals (deer & cardinals). Not exactly what I was looking for. I think I will only use one stocking design out of the whole book right now. There are several great ornament designs and other cute projects that I look forward to doing.

I too checked this book out of my local library and think it's really good! It's from the publishers of Better Homes and Gardens and Cross Stitch & Country Crafts magazine, and there are some really nice stocking patterns. My favorites are Colonial Heritage Sampler stocking and Victorian stocking (by Barbara Baatz) and Songs of Joy stocking (by Nancy Rossi). There are also smaller patterns where you just stitch the stocking cuff -- cute and don't require as much stitching. There are color photos of every finished stocking, and the charts are color and are easy to follow.

I agree with the previous reviewer, these designs are incredibly beautiful. My sister-in-law owns this book and I have been borrowing it from her over and over. Until I saw this book, it was kind of hard to find stocking designs for everyone that celebrated Christ's birth rather than the coming of Santa Claus. Not any more! (Just so you know, there are also non-religious and Santa designs, too.)

I got this book from the library and I just don't want to return it! It is dissapointing that it is no longer being printed. The designs are beautiful with a great variety to suit everyone. That's great if you are like me and only do cross-stitch for other people!

A Cross Stitch Christmas: Handmade Treasures (Better Homes and Gardens) A Cross Stitch Christmas: Handmade Treasures (Better Homes and Gardens)

I second the previous review. Outstanding work even for Better Homes and Gardens. Everything Mary said, I second and I am a collector as is she. I was particularly grateful to see the addition of the Hardinger ornaments, and the men's gifts.

First off, this book is put together beautifully just as so many other Better Homes and Gardens crafts books are (I know, I own several). It's a large 128 page hardcover book with so many beautiful designs you'll want to make them all.Though this book is called "A Cross-Stitch Christmas," it has so many designs that could be used year round and in many different projects. For example, the angel tree topper could easily be made into an angel wall hanging or angel pillow. There are also sun, moon, and star designs that could be used year round. Also here, you'll find a wreath design that is a circular motif made up of fruit - you could use it to make a pillow or wall hanging for year round also. There are also items for the fisherman in your life that include a fly-fishing case (for all their lures), and several pocket designs that include fly fishing, golf, racing, and tools. For the lady in your life there is a stunning design for a jewelry roll and accessories. That said there are tons of Christmas designs from ornaments and wreaths to an assortment of embroidered Christmas stockings. I typically mark my favorite pages in my stitchery books with tiny post it notes - I found that there were so many designs I admired, that I had a virtual storm of post its all over the insides of the book. This beautiful book was so full of wonderful designs! I'm so glad I purchased it, you would be too.

Some fun ideas for winter crafts whereby you can use organized supplies such as:

1. Cotton is very useful in making some great winter art projects and if these cotton balls are a bit colder they can even look like mini snowballs. Your child can also draw wonderful winter scenery and then rip them, fluff them and glue them at the places where snow has to be shown.

2. Winter is always incomplete without marshmallows. Marshmallows is added treats in hot chocolate but can also be used for winter crafts. Your kids can take three big marshmallows and then stack them on top of each other so as to make a mini and tasty snowman. Toothpicks can also be used to hold the marshmallows together and also as the arms. Mini marshmallows can be a great fun when snowballs are attached to winter collages.

3. Plaster of Paris is also used in many great ways and not just for winter crafts and one of such ways is to use it to make “footprints in the snow.” For this, you can fill a box lid with negligible item such as Plaster of Paris. When it settles and dries you can make different footprints in the snow or could be used as the side of fist to look like a baby’s footprints.

4. Birds that stay in place all through winter needs food and during winter children can make a pine cone bird feeder. So you need to cover a pine cone in peanut butter and dip it in the bird seed and then tie a bit of string to one of these pine cones and hung it up on the tree outside.

5. You can also use glitter to add so that any basic winter art project looks even more fancy and beautiful.
